That’s the best word to describe Jay Eckhout’s work with NuTech Seed.
Not only is Jay a loyal NuTech Seed Dealer, he also has a solid base of loyal customers who plant NuTech Seed products year after year.
“I started with AgSource back in the day and when we merged with NuTech Seed, I stayed with it,” said Eckhout, who is honored as Most Valuable Dealer this month. “The customers I have are very loyal and I really appreciate the loyalty they have shown me over the years.”
Eckhout not only sells NuTech Seed products, he also raises corn, soybeans, alfalfa and cattle on his operation, just two miles from where he grew up. His operation is located in Buffalo County, Nebraska, just northwest of Kearney. He is the proud father of two daughters and also has two grandsons.
Eckhout credits the fact that he raises the products he sells as an attribute to his success.
“Customers put their faith in me,” he said, “and I try to choose the corn like it’s my own field.”
Performance helps, too.
“One thing that I like about NuTech Seed is it seems like we’re always trying to find the best genetics out there,” Eckhout said. “We have different choices and as good a lineup as anybody in the business – not just one crop, but all of the crops – and that gives our customers solid choices.”
“NuTech Seed has never really let me down – I have never been completely disappointed in anything,” he added.
Eckhout, who works on Terry Stark’s team in central Nebraska, also appreciates the support he receives from Terry, Jason and the entire Cutting Edge Seed & Chemical team. “It’s nice to have them close by and they’re willing to help when I need it,” he said.
But what is Eckhout’s favorite part of selling NuTech Seed products?
“When you talk to people at harvest and they tell you how good the corn or beans were, and that they are happy with their results,” he said. “That’s the part I like the best.”

Gerry Quinn had a need and Ryan Hollenberg delivered.
Quinn, the third-generation owner of Quinn Farm Supply in Monroe City, Missouri, needed to provide his customers with a solution for weeds.
That’s when NuTech Seed District Sales Manager Ryan Hollenberg came calling with LibertyLink™ soybeans.
“I was skeptical about the soybeans, because I hadn’t seen them in the field,” said Quinn, who is honored as NuTech Seed’s Most Valuable Dealer this month. “But I knew my customers needed them.”
Quinn started selling seed out of Quinn Farm Supply, which has been family-owned since 1948, when he came home to the family business in 2008. Previously, his father focused the business on feed, fertilizer and chemical, while his grandfather was focused mainly on trucking. Currently, Gerry focuses on offering seed, fertilizer and chemical choices for his customers.
In addition to the value of Liberty’s weed control, Quinn was also interested in NuTech Seed’s conventional corn choices. Again, Quinn was skeptical as he had yet to see the products in the field, but once he saw the consistent performance for himself, he was sold.
It’s the same with his customers, he said. Some had no prior experience with NuTech Seed products, but once they put it on the farm, they were ordering again and increasing their orders.
“It’s a good quality product,” Quinn said. “I’m a salesman, so I can get the product on the farm. After that, it needs to perform and it will stay on the farm. NuTech Seed corn does just that.”
For that reason, among others, Quinn’s business continues to grow.
Quinn also credits seed salesman Alan Parn for his dedication to Quinn Farm Supply’s customers.
“He does an excellent job of getting product onto farmers’ fields and picking hybrids that complement the type of soil they have,” Quinn said. “Alan is the type of person that will work endlessly for his customers. He is seeing that work pay off for both himself and his customers, who are getting higher yields.”
Another key to Quinn Farm Supply’s success is scouting products.
“I don’t sell anything that I haven’t seen,” he said. “I have plots so I can see the standability, how a product holds up in the drought, and other agronomic factors. I’m not looking at yield as much in the plots as those things. If I see that the product stands up in the plot, I’ll put it in a guy’s field.”
One success that Quinn can celebrate is seeing a customer recruit his friends and neighbors to plant NuTech Seed.
“We got a few bags – maybe a dozen – on a person’s farm a little outside of our main area,” he said. “He had it planted next to another brand’s product and when his neighbors saw the corn, they recognized it as better than the other brands in the area. So our sales increased the following year because we sold to the original customer plus five of his friends and neighbors, just because they saw the product in person and saw that it could perform.”
Quinn Farm Supply is celebrating its 70th year in 2018. Gerry grew up on a farm and currently raises cattle while his father-in-law farms his family’s ground.
Quinn Farm Supply has been selling NuTech Seed since 2014.

Steady growth year after year is the goal and Community Mills has been hitting that goal in stride since the southwest Michigan retailer started selling NuTech Seed products in 2013.
“We haven’t had any dips yet – and we don’t plan to in the future,” said Jacob Robinson, Outside Sales for Community Mills, the NuTech Seed’s Most Valuable Dealer for January. “The product speaks for itself.”
NuTech Seed’s hybrid corn performance in third-party trials, including the F.I.R.S.T. trials, is a huge factor in driving sales, Jacob said. In 2017, NuTech Seed hybrid corn totaled seven wins, including the No. 1 hybrid in the entire MIWC Region, and 20 top-5 finishes.
But the performance doesn’t stop with the F.I.R.S.T. trials. NuTech Seed hybrid corn had a successful 2017 in Michigan State University trials with five wins – including the Entire Zone 1 and Entire Zone 3 – and 19 top-5 finishes. Community Mills also has its own plots and shares plot information from other NuTech Seed plots in Michigan with their growers.
“That’s part of the team mentality that NuTech has and what we like about NuTech Seed,” Jacob said.
As a family-owned company, Community Mills also appreciates the relationship-focused aspect of NuTech Seed.
“The team atmosphere is a huge benefit,” Jacob said. “Being able to talk to the top guys, like Gene, Mitch, and Jim, that’s a big deal for us. We can talk directly to them, voice our concerns and accomplishments. They know what I’m facing, what the farmer’s been facing. Other seed companies are not that way and that strong relationship with the office team is one of the most important things to us.”
Jacob also added that he enjoys being able to travel with NuTech Seed on the company’s annual incentive trip. “Being able to take our people on the trip, that’s one of the best parts,” he said.
Jacob also appreciates the work District Sales Manager Jon Tone does to support Community Mills.
“He does a great job thinking outside the box and working on programs that are unique to our area,” Jacob said. “The flexibility we have to get the deal done and do what’s right for the farmer – that’s a huge benefit.”
But perhaps the proudest accomplishment for the team at Community Mills is the results from their annual yield contest over the past two years.
“We run this high yield contest and give away $1000,” Jacob said. “The last two years, NuTech Seed has won it. Last year 806 won and this year 308 won with 314 bushels. That’s one of my proudest accomplishments.”
Community Mills, a family-owned, full-service agricultural center provides much more for the community of Cassopolis and southwest Michigan that just selling seed. Other services include custom application, soil testing, and delivery of feed, fertilizer and chemicals, in addition to a retail store that carries products for gardeners, small animal owners, outdoor enthusiasts and casual shoppers looking for durable apparel. Community Mills also makes feed for cattle, horses, hogs and chickens. The company employs about 25 full-time employees year-round, plus additional seasonal help in the spring and fall.

Of everything 45 years in the seed industry has taught Tom Nolden, the most important thing is how important it is to build quality, lasting relationships.
“It’s phenomenal in that many years how many people you meet, and how close the industry really is,” said Nolden, who is honored as the December Most Valuable Dealer for NuTech Seed.
A Wisconsin native, Tom and his wife Rita live in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, a suburb of Madison. The couple has been married for 44 years and they have two children and two grandchildren.
Tom started in the seed business in 1972 as a detassler.
“I was at the bottom of the totem pole and just worked my way up,” he said. “I started off in production but now I really prefer sales.”
In 30 years of seed production, Tom enjoyed learning about seed corn, specifically the purity of the seed.
“You have to keep it so pure and there are a lot of steps to get the best product,” he said. “One of the greatest things I like about NuTech Seed is that I never have to worry about the quality of the product. I have yet to have a customer complaint in the summertime. The seeds grow like they’re supposed to and I’m extremely thankful for the production quality – it’s second-to-none.”
Tom met Aaron Digman, his NuTech Seed District Sales Manager, when he left the production side of the industry and started working in sales. Digman, who lives just south of Nolden, recruited him to the team eight years ago.
“Another great thing about NuTech Seed is the people at the office,” Tom said. “I can call in and the voices are always pleasant, even if I don’t know them. It’s so unique in this industry to be able to easily talk to the General Manager, product managers, and different levels of people in the company.”
It’s relationships that drive Tom to continue working in seed sales – from the relationships with the NuTech Seed team in the office and the sales field to relationships with customers in his area.
“One of the customers I have today – he’s a 100% NuTech Seed grower – actually started off as a coworker that was a contract grower of seed corn when I was in the production side,” he said. “When I switched to sales and started selling NuTech Seed, I went to him as a sales guy and he switched based on our previous relationship. Now he’s growing 100% NuTech Seed corn and soybeans. It’s just unique how he started in one company with me and switched when I did.”
Tom also enjoys building relationships that don’t always start focused on seed.
“Another guy, I like to help him with some projects around his farm,” he said. “So I helped him build a small building this summer. I just did it because it’s fun, but we built a relationship on that and that’s really the beauty of the job.”
While Tom is growing closer to retirement age, he hopes that when his retirement day comes, that the relationships he has built in the seed industry will continue.
“I go to their farms now as a friend first, not always as a salesman,” Tom said. “I figure when I retire someday, they will stay as my friends.”
“It’s a pleasure to go out and see the people I work with,” he said. “This is definitely a career that I enjoy.”

Gavin Jager always wanted to sell seed.
NuTech Seed’s Most Valuable Dealer for the month of October grew up on a farm in central Nebraska, near Hazard and Ravenna, and he still farms today, alongside his dad and uncle.
After receiving his degree in Agribusiness from the University of Nebraska in Kearney, Gavin started renting some land for his own farming operation and over time, he has built up his business.
Back in 2013, Gavin decided to start planting NuTech Seed, after seeing how successful the products had been on his family’s operation since the early 2000’s.
“I’ve always known the Starks,” said Gavin, whose District Sales Manager is Jason Stark. “I had bought seed from them before, so when I saw that NuTech Seed had good products, I decided to run with it.”
Since joining the NuTech Seed sales team, Gavin has enjoyed pushing himself to grow his sales each year. He especially enjoys meeting growers at local farm shows and seeing them become new customers.
Gavin also appreciates the relationships he’s developed while working with NuTech Seed.
“When Gene (Kassmeyer) comes out and knows me by name, that’s pretty remarkable,” he said. “Having a personal relationship with the General Manager – that doesn’t always happen in this industry.”
Gavin added NuTech Seed being more relationship-oriented than bigger seed companies is one reason he enjoys his work. He enjoys attending the annual incentive trips and getting the chance to meet other dealers from across the company’s footprint.
While relationships are a key part of the selling process, Gavin said the performance is equally important, so he’s happy to see the repeatable performance NuTech Seed products have had across the company’s footprint.
“People drive by our fields and they can see that the products have performance,” Gavin said. “That gets them talking.”
Word of mouth is another factor in his success.
“Guys drive by and see our stuff – they ask what we planted and I tell them about the product,” he said. “My agronomy background and being a local farmer help, too. I can tell customers what works and where.”
Of course, making the sale is still hard work.
“You’ve got to go out and meet with people,” he said. “Ride in the combine with them or sit down and talk to them.”

For Jason Androli, it’s all about family.
That’s the reason he joined the NuTech Seed team three years ago.
“I used to work for a coop and when I left, I knew I was going to sell seed, so I went to a lot of plot days while I tried to decide what brand to sell,” said Androli, who is being honored as NuTech Seed’s Most Valuable Dealer for the month of September. “NuTech struck me as a family-oriented company. Being able to bring my family to a lot of the meetings and having them involved in the business – that means a lot to me.”
Jason and his wife Danielle are parents to Adian, Charlie, Noah, Kaitlyn and Larissa. The family lives and farms near Janesville, Minnesota, where the Androlis are very involved in the community.
In addition to selling seed, Jason also sells chemicals, does custom spraying, and farms with his dad and brother. Needless to say, Jason stays very busy, so he relies on his wife and kids to help with the seed business.
“My family does just as much work as I do when it comes to selling the seed,” he said. “I’m happy to be able to include them in the activities.”
Jason, who is embarking on his third sales year with NuTech Seed, also relies on the performance NuTech Seed corn has had in southern Minnesota.
“It’s great to have corn hybrids that are always placing well in the F.I.R.S.T. trials,” he said. “That makes selling a lot easier.”
Jason takes pride in his plots and the success he has seen the NuTech Seed hybrids have against local competitors.
“When you put NuTech Seed hybrid corn against other brands in our area, it seems like we’re coming out victorious on all of them,” he said. “Winning a lot of the plots – that helps me increase sales.”
From year one to year two, Jason saw many growers double their corn acres based on first year performance, and that’s something he is looking forward to again in 2018.
One of Jason’s favorite accomplishments in his time with NuTech Seed was selling 900 units of soybeans to a grower in Montana.
"He saw from a farmer friend in MN, NuTech Seed soybeans up against another brand and it won by quite a bit! That says a lot to me!" said Jason.
Jason has also found social media to be a great place to recruit new growers. He is very active on Facebook – you can follow him @AndroliAg – and has seen his followers grow quickly over the last few weeks. Throughout the summer, Jason posted video tours of his plots and they have been a big hit.
“I try to post agronomy updates and videos from the field,” he said. “It’s great to see the followers growing every week.”

NuTech Seed Dealer Mark Chamberlain has always been involved in agriculture, but he never thought he’d be selling seed.
In fact selling seed is “the last thing” Mark, who is being honored as the Most Valuable Dealer for August 2017, ever thought he would do. His District Sales Manager, Sam Korn, echoed the sentiment.
“I never expected Mark would become a Dealer for me,” said Korn, who has known Mark for years. “But his drive and his knowledge of our products have both been phenomenal. He’s doing a fantastic job.”
Mark is based in Litchfield, Michigan, and is part of Team Korn, under the leadership of Sam and Beth Korn.
“My relationship with Sam and Beth started with my father, who built grain bins and worked for Sam’s parents,” Mark said. “A few years ago, Sam asked me about selling seed and I’ve had quite a bit of success and a lot of satisfaction working for Sam and for NuTech Seed.”
This will be Mark’s third selling season as a NuTech Seed Dealer and he is excited to improve on last year’s success.
“In the short time I’ve been a Dealer, I’ve found that if you give farmers a good product, they’ll buy more from you the next year,” he said. “I just enjoy helping them be successful.”
Mark knows that the first step to making the sale is having the right products for that grower’s field.
“The products we have are second to none,” he said, “and we are really on our game now, with the choices we have in corn and soybeans. Our products are very high yielding, which basically helps them to sell themselves.”
Mark’s favorite part of the selling process is what he calls “getting the kill.”
“I like making contact and developing relationships with the farmer,” Mark said. “When you take the time to explain the product to the farmer and then finally get the order – that’s the best part.”
Last year, Mark sold one customer 100% of his seed.
“It was his first time trying NuTech Seed products,” Mark said. “It was very rewarding to see him putting that trust in me and in our company. He rode with me twice in my combine and then rode once with Sam (Korn) on his farm – that helped make the sale. It’s all in the ground now, so we’ll see what harvest brings.”
Michigan crops got off to a pretty fantastic start this spring, Mark said, but things have been pretty dry as of late. Mark isn’t sure how the dry weather will impact yield, but he is confident in the NuTech Seed products that are in the ground.
Mark raises corn and soybeans on his own farm, where he lives with his wife Karen, of 33 years. Mark and Karen have two children, Nicole and Matt, and two grandsons, Colin & Logan.
The Chamberlains like to escape the farm on the weekends to spend time at their lake house and on their boat.

He’s a neighbor and a farmer first.
“I’m no salesman, so I let the data do the selling for me,” said Caleb Hagen, NuTech Seed’s Most Valuable Dealer for the month of July. “NuTech Seed’s F.I.R.S.T. trial results in my region speak volumes to my friends and neighbors.”
Raised on the family farm outside of New Richland, Minnesota, Caleb and his wife Hillary, who were married in January of 2016, live just down the road from his family farm. He is the third generation to farm that ground and works the land alongside of his dad, who still lives on the farm.
“Dad is still actively farming, so we’re just in the process of me taking on more on the farm,” Caleb said.
So for right now, selling seed is a great business to pair with his work on the farm. And like Caleb said, the corn and soybean performance is the best sales tool he’s found.
“This is only my second year selling NuTech Seed, but most of the people who bought from me in year one, doubled, if not more, in the second year because they had success,” he said. “As long as I can keep selling without letting my friends and neighbors down, I plan to be an option for them.”
Caleb has known NuTech Seed District Sales Manager Tim Bartness for years, so when Tim asked him to start selling seed, he knew it was an option worth exploring.
“I started looking at the F.I.R.S.T. trial results and that got me curious,” he admitted. “So I went with Tim and (NuTech Seed Regional Sales Manager Jerrod) Tanke to a Dealer meeting in Nebraska to learn more about the company and meet other people in the business.
“It looked like a nice business, a company that had its head on right.”
So Caleb started selling NuTech Seed products through his dealership, Chagen Seed.
One product that he brought to the playing field in his part of Waseca County is LibertyLink® soybeans.
“I brought LibertyLink® to an area that had never considered it,” Caleb said. “Last year, I planted half LibertyLink® and half RoundUp Ready 2 Yield® and this year I planted all Liberty. So far, they are looking beautiful.”
As far as corn goes, Caleb said that anything from 5D-196™ to 5L-504™ has seen a lot of success in his area.
When it comes to people in the company, Caleb has only positive experiences to report.
“I like how the company is orchestrated,” he said. “Tim handles 99% of my issues and questions, and the things that he can’t answer, he learns and takes care of for me.
“The whole company seems very transparent – no one’s too big or too important. It’s got a small company vibe with big company results.”
And at the end of the day, Caleb knows it’s the performance that brings home the bacon.
“When you can show yield results and harvest data in the abundant success that NuTech Seed has had in our neighborhood, it’s hard for people not to get interested.”

Chris Freed wasn’t expecting to start selling seed when he did about three years ago.
“I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” said Chris, NuTech Seed’s Most Valuable Dealer for the month of June. “I took a leap of faith and it’s been really good.”
Chris’ dealership, C 6 Seed, is based in Scandia, Kansas, where he is co-managing the large farm operation he’s been a part of for the last 36 years.
“Leroy (Dana) was just driving down the road one day – our farm shop is just a mile and a half south of where I live – and he came into the shop one day,” Chris recalled. “We sat down and visited for a while, I asked a few questions, and the next thing I know, he’s back down here to sign the papers and we’re selling seed.
“I’d say he’s a pretty good salesman,” he chuckled.
Chris grew up on a farm, but when the agriculture economy went south in the 1980’s, he went to work for a local individual on his operation and has been there ever since. Chris also has a welding business and he has benefitted from that as part of his customer base.
For Chris, it all comes down to relationships and community support.
“We’re lucky enough to be in a community where we get a lot of support and that’s helped us grow our business,” he said.
In addition to the community support, he is continually impressed with the supportive relationships with everyone in the NuTech Seed family.
“No matter where you go, someone remembers who you are,” Chris said. “It’s a really nice feeling that everyone in the company – even if they just spoke to you one time – they remember your name every time and that means a lot.
“We’re a very family-oriented bunch down here, so the family part of the entire thing is a huge deal.”
The performance story doesn’t hurt either.
“Our first year, we didn’t sell a lot of seed, but what we sold performed; it was good or better than our competition,” Chris said. “We’ve had a couple individuals that were planting another brand, so they tried a few bags the first year and NuTech Seed just blew the other stuff away. Each year they’ve increased and this year one of those guys is 100% NuTech Seed.”
Chris admits that he’s not much of a plot guy; he prefers studying the broad spectrum.
“Everybody down here, their ground’s the same,” he said. “So I tend to do most of my yield data by what I see across the broad spectrum.
“Most people around here respect me enough to know I’m not pulling their leg.”
It helps that Chris plants NuTech Seed products on his operation.
“As far as the corn goes, the 510, 713, and 709 have really stood out down here,” he said. “And LibertyLink soybeans. We had a few plant them last year and this year they’ve just blown up down here – it’s unbelievable.”
Chris lives in Scandia with his wife Crystal of 27 years. He’s a proud father of four beautiful daughters and three granddaughters.
Overall, he is happy with his entire experience so far with NuTech Seed.
“The one thing that really stands out to me is that NuTech Seed stands behind their products,” he said. “That means an awful lot to a lot of growers.
“It’s been a really good experience for me – the products are great. We’re happy and the customers are too. I don’t have any complaints whatsoever.”Chris Freed wasn’t expecting to start selling seed when he did about three years ago.

Agriculture might be in his bloodline, but Steve Schultz is a first-generation seed salesman. The Watertown, Wisconsin, native is honored as this month’s Most Valuable Dealer for his commitment to NuTech Seed through his dealership, S S Seed Solutions.
A seven-year veteran with NuTech Seed, Schultz stays busy on his family farm, working with his wife and daughters as well as his dad and brother. The farm has been in his family for about 112 years, he said, and includes 100 head of steers and 160 acres of farmland. In addition to the farming operation, Steve is a Dealer for NuTech Seed and has worked a job in town for the last 33 years. Eventually, Steve would like to spend all of his time on the farm, working the land and selling NuTech Seed.
Prior to joining the NuTech Seed family as a Dealer, Steve planted Pioneer products on his farm.
“I always enjoyed challenging my (Pioneer) dealers as far as what hybrids to plant,” he said. “I wanted to be a dealer, but figured Pioneer didn’t want two dealers within a couple miles of each other.”
Steve began watching F.I.R.S.T. trial results and noticed another seed brand emerging with results even better than Pioneer’s. “I started seeing NuTech Seed consistently at the top or towards the top, so I gave the products a try. The performance has continued to be evident to this date.”
When Steve began selling NuTech Seed products, he worked with Aaron Digman, the District Sales Manager in his part of Wisconsin. A couple years ago, Bryan Crary joined Aaron’s district and took over as Steve’s DSM.
“I feel I’ve been blessed, first with Aaron teaching me the business, and now learning how Bryan does his part,” Steve said. “I’ve been blessed by both of them.”
Steve is also blessed with a family that helps on the farm and with the seed dealership.
“My daughters help Daddy throw seed around and put up signs,” he said. “I try to make it all in the family.”
Steve and his wife have two daughters – Payton is 11 years old and Sydney is 9 years old. His wife is a department manager at Menards in Johnson Creek.
After his recent hip replacement, Steve’s wife and nephews helped out even more by delivering seed and getting growers ready for planting season.
When it comes to sales success, Steve has quite a few stories to share, including getting one of his relatives to switch to NuTech Seed.
“When I first approved this relative, he told me, ‘I’ll plant your stuff, but if it does not grow, no matter how well we know each other, I will not plant it,’” Steve said. “Now he grows almost entirely NuTech Seed products.”
Steve’s success isn’t limited to converting growers within his family tree – he also changed the mind of a high school classmate.
“This guy is good friends with a Mycogen dealer, but I had him try out six bags of NuTech Seed,” Steve said. “That’s all it took and now he plants entirely NuTech Seed corn and beans.”
Corn and soybeans are the top products Steve sells in Wisconsin, but he added that he’s sold a lot of alfalfa this spring due to so much winterkill. “Otherwise this year has been an even split of corn and beans,” he said.
Some of the best performing products in his area, Dodge and Jefferson counties, between Madison and Milwaukee, include the 601, 702, 503, and 504 series.
Steve is confident in his future as a seed salesman for NuTech Seed.
“As long as they keep putting out products like they do, I know my sales are going to grow,” he said. “More and more people are hearing about NuTech Seed, through F.I.R.S.T. trials and word of mouth. My goal is to build my dealership to where I can have the freedom and the choice to just sell seed and farm full time.”

When Ed Thurn joined the team at Luckey Farmers Inc., the farmer-owned coop was selling a couple national brands in addition to their own seed brand, Gro-Mor. But Luckey Farmers knew to be successful, they didn’t need to offer every possible seed choice, they just needed to offer the right seed for their growers’ acres.
“We don’t want to be Wal-Mart,” Thurn said. “All the research shows that there are 2.5 seed companies on every farm and we want to be two of those with NuTech Seed and Gro-Mor.”
Luckey Farmers, the April Most Valuable Dealer, serves a four-county area in Northwest Ohio, with their main office located in Woodville. The company was established in 1919, the result of several mergers, consolidations and acquisitions over the years. The entire team, more than 100 employees, is dedicated to providing the highest quality farm products and services for the success of more than 2,000 members.
Thurn, the sales manager and seed production manager for Luckey Farmers, leads a team of eight salespeople that includes five agronomists. He works closely with Bob Beyer, who purchases all of Luckey Farmers’ products and works directly with NuTech Seed District Sales Manager Chris Holt and Customer Service & Logistics Manager Jane Synder.
Both Thurn and Beyer will agree that LibertyLink soybeans is what brought Luckey Farmers to its relationship with NuTech Seed.
“The genetics fit our area really well,” Beyer said. “LibertyLink soybeans have really caught fire for us.”
Thurn said the sales continue to grow for the 2017 planting season. “A year ago, we sold 6,000 bags of NuTech Seed beans; this year, we’re close to 12,000 bags, doubling our bean sales.
“In the last three years, we’ve made huge increases with NuTech Seed products.”
The Luckey Farmers sales team is comfortable selling NuTech Seed products, Thurn said, specifically because of the way they complement the Gro-Mor line.
Luckey Farmers is always working to do what’s best for the growers in Northwest Ohio. One thing that Thurn did to benefit growers was to select the five best corn products for the area from NuTech Seed’s extensive product portfolio – and sell only those hybrids.
“We focused on the five products that work in our area, that made the most sense for us to sell to a farmer,” Thurn said. “We have a 2,500-acre farmer that tried a couple bags of NuTech Seed last year and this year he switched to one-third NuTech Seed corn and the rest is our brand, Gro-Mor.
“Guys like what they’re seeing from NuTech Seed corn and by pairing it with our brand, it allows us to go in to these farmers with a really nice package deal. We can sell a farmer all of his corn with these two brands and he’s not putting all his eggs in one basket.”
Holt agreed: “Multiple locations and product lines allows them to provide a custom service level. Each sales person builds a package per their customer’s needs and our high performing seed fits right in.”
Another reason Beyer likes featuring NuTech Seed as Luckey Farmers’ national brand is the people.
“We’re getting the genetics of a national company, but the advantage of doing business with a smaller company,” Beyer said. “I’m the one that communicates the most with the team at NuTech Seed; I enter all the orders on SeedWare, coordinate deliveries with Jane and Angel (Thomsen), and when Chris needs to communicate a message to the team, he comes to me and I get the message out to the rest of our team.”
Dan Sheldrick of Bowling Green, Ohio, played an influential role in Luckey Farmers’ decision to sell NuTech Seed. Sheldrick, one of the first NuTech Seed growers in the state, began a dealership years ago, but wanted to focus on farming, so he turned his seed sales over to Luckey Farmers and remains a valued customer to this day.
“We have some very loyal customers,” Beyer said. “Our entire organization is a team effort and we’re working to provide the best for our customers.
“We’re a full agronomy dealer – seed isn’t our total business, but we look at seed as a way to get on the farms. Once we’re in, we can get the rest of our programs on the farms as well.”
Luckey Farmers’ current facilities consist of seven grain locations, eight agronomy facilities, a feed manufacturing plant, seed processing facility, three cardtrol petroleum stations and four fuel delivery trucks to service farm, home and light industry.

Beau Romsey doesn’t take much credit for his success. Instead, he praises the company and its people, specifically his District Sales Manager, for helping him grow his dealership.
NuTech Seed’s Most Valuable Dealer for the month of March, Beau is a third-generation producer and seed salesman from Gilbert, Iowa, who has been with NuTech Seed “from the beginning,” he said.
“I started with NuTech Seed when they started in Iowa; once they moved into this part of the Cornbelt, I started as a dealer with my dad,” Beau said. “We chose NuTech Seed mostly because of the long relationships we had built with the pillars of the seed industry, and also because people that we knew, that we’ve been working with for years, were going to this brand.”
Beau gives a lot of credit to his DSM, Scott Broesder, for helping him develop and grow a prosperous dealership. “The key to the success of my business has been a great DSM,” Beau said. “I’ve been with Scott since I was a kid, probably 25 years.”
Beau grew up on a farm north of Ames, learning skills from his late father and grandpa, and his mother still lives on the farm today. A graduate of Gilbert High School, Beau took some agronomy classes at DMACC but learned most from first-hand experience. His brother never got into the farming operation and now lives in Chicago with his family, raising four little boys.
Beau has been married to his wife Christine for more than three years and he credits her for valuable help with the dealership. In addition to selling seed, Beau also farms and runs two additional businesses: a spray business and a snow removal business. “So I stay busy, even when there’s not much snow,” he laughed.
As a farmer-dealer, Beau plants what he sells and he said that is another key to his success. “The fact that you can go out and say, ‘I’ve had this on my farm for two years and it works, so you’ve got to try this,’ is probably what has grown my dealership the most,” he said. “A lot of the competition can’t do that. That’s one of our strongest allies, being able to be a farmer-dealer, because we can tell (customers) first hand.”
“We’re not going to sell (products) we didn’t like on our own farm.”
Beau values all of the relationships he has within the NuTech Seed family. “The company just has a family feel that you don’t get in a larger corporation,” he said. “If I have an issue or a question, I can just text the product guys or the GM, and I’ll get a response right away. Being able to know everyone in the company and have these close relationships, it’s a personal feeling instead of getting lost in that corporate world.”

Darrell Feenstra of New Holland, South Dakota, is the winner of the Most Valuable Dealer Award for February.
Darrell has been selling seed for 36 years and has been with NuTech Seed since its inception. District Sales Manager Dan Van Drongelen estimates that Darrell has been selling NuTech Seed for 15 years.
“I’m really happy with NuTech Seed,” Darrell said. “I’ve gone through five different companies and this company is really family oriented.”
One thing that Darrell appreciates is being on a first-name basis with so many people within the NuTech Seed organization.
“When you go to meetings, the top people know you by your first name,” he said. “Everyone at the company really works with you. It’s a good company to work for.”
A native of New Holland, Darrell and his wife have two children and three grandchildren. Their son and daughter-in-law are raising their children, ages 9 and 13, in New Holland, while their daughter lives in Crooks, just north of Sioux Falls, with her son who is six.
Darrell says that his family keeps him pretty busy; he spends a lot of a time going to ball games to watch his grandchildren play.
In addition to selling NuTech Seed, Darrell also farms 480 acres and raises livestock.
Darrell is very happy with the seed that he plants and sells from NuTech Seed.
“We have good seed, good genetics,” he said. “I don’t really have a lot of complaints.”
One of the big differentiators from other seed companies is the fact that NuTech Seed offers LibertyLink® soybeans.
“I’m planting 100% LibertyLink® beans and 70% of my bean sales this year were LibertyLink®,” Darrell said. “LibertyLink® has really increased my bean sales. I’m up 1000 bags from last year because of Liberty and the performance.”
Darrell sees solid performance in both NuTech Seed corn and soybeans in his area. He added that he has about a dozen customers that plant 100% NuTech Seed.
“They are very happy with it and they keep coming back,” he said. “NuTech Seed is easy to sell. Once you get the customers started on it, they come back.”
